THE GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD.

THE GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD.

It focuses on the study of English grammar and vocabulary through reading and writing exercises, as well as text translation.

Learning is based on carrying out exercises related to grammar and vocabulary and translation activities in which previously acquired knowledge is used.

Clear advantages regarding the teaching of the English language:

  • Knowledge and control of grammar is widely developed through learning rules, norms, structures, etc.
  • The work of reading and writing is deepened.
  • Literature is largely used, through which the culture related to the English language is learned, in addition to the development of English learning through translation.

Role of the teacher.

He is the highest authority in the class, he is the one who knows, since he knows the grammar manuals in detail. He also organizes and directs the students, and then corrects their mistakes.

Role of the student.

Passive recipient of the knowledge transmitted by the teacher. He carries out the activities individually. He must develop grammatical competence that allows him to read, translate and write in the target language. You must also be able to reflect on complex and subtle grammatical aspects, which help you solve language problems: how to interpret a text? What is the best translation of a text? What rule applies in a specific case?

Example:

An activity that can be used is teaching grammar rules through examples. That is, the rule of regular and irregular verbs can be taught by presenting a list of verbs and their conjugation in the past simple. Children can practice this rule by creating sentences using the learned verbs.
